A Stitch in Time - exploring our circadian rhythms in mixed media

2/24/2023

In December of 2022, I embarked on a journey to create a piece that represents our circadian rhythms and how they affect our waking and sleeping brains. The process was collaborative as I worked very closely with a neurologist who specializes in sleep medicine. She was invaluable in giving me resources and ideas that made the piece come to life and I am so grateful for all of her input along the way.  As always, I learned SO much while making the piece about how our brains work. Below you will find detailed photos about my artistic process and below that a fully annotated look at  all of the symbols included in this piece.  I urge you to visit SaveStandardTime.com to learn more! Click on the thumbnails to enlarge each photo for a better look. Below the annotated brain you will find an audio file if you have difficulty reading the fine print. Enjoy!

A segmented circle is topped by a segment finished in yellow fuzzy fabric with beads attached and some embroidery thread. you can see other segments labeled 102, 2-3, 11-midnight around the center
First segment of fabric fastened down to artist canvas.
a full brain in a oval embroidery hoop and about half of it is finished with fabric in purples on the left side and yellows on the right side. At the bottom in the unfinished portion is a scissor, needle and thread, small pliers and a skein of purple emboridery thread.
Halfway done with laying down the fabric and embroidery with a few fun elements added too.
a close up of dark purple blue fabric and embroidery. running along the left side is a row of gold beads, upper right side a gold star. In the middle is an embroidered purple melatonin molecule shap and under that 3 little squares and each has a Z in it.
Melatonin molecule embroidered in purple thread along with some ZZZs.
The finished fiber art bain with painted rays of purple, pink, red and yellow alternating with white coming out from it. In the middle of the brain is a plain white circle.
Stretched onto stretcher bars and the painting has begun.
Painting of the interior of the brain signifying day-sun and night-moon.
The final piece took approximately seven weeks in total from initial conception. It is comprised of fabric, thread, beads, charms, buttons, clock hands, and paint on canvas and gallery wrap stretcher bars.  16x20 inches of bright color and texture with so much to look at. See the annotated version of 'A Stitch in Time' below for the full explanation of every detail.
The finished piece a brightly colored mixed media brain in mostly purples and yelllows with a clock in the center and hours of the day and night represented inside and outside the brain. Each hour inside the brain is a different color and separated from the next by lines of gold beads. Outside the brain are the hours in the opposite colors to the inside separated by gold brainwaves.
