Labyrinth Brain - 14inch round - A Neuro Journey through the Mind
This piece is a fabric collaged, hand embroidered and beaded labyrinth in the shape of a brain, sewn directly onto artist's canvas. I then stretched it onto a 14 inch quilter's hoop and painted around the edges in a rainbow of acrylic paints. It is finished off with a stencil of bronze fire and gold cracks at two edges. It is very imperfect - just like our brains.
This piece was a departure for me. Instead of mapping functional areas and cortexes of the brain, I created a labyrinth that you can trace with your eyes starting at the bottom of the brain and ending up in the center. I used a wide variety of specialty fabrics and hand-embroidered the black outline with an imperfect satin stitch. It's very appropriately a little rough around the edges. I was thinking of Leonard Cohen's saying when I finished the edges, "There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." For me this piece is perfectly imperfect in so many ways.
