My quilting mother, Dorothea Bowling, was working on this white on white hand quilted lap quilt when she passed away. I took it and hand embroidered/beaded one of my signature brains on it. A very fitting last collaboration between us.
I credit my mom with my sense of color and my ability to freestyle hand embroidery. She gave me my first encyclopedia of embroidery stitches when I was in High School and my first sewing machine while I was in college back in the 1970’s. She raised me to be fearless with whatever craft I wanted to attempt as I grew up watching her do everything from mosaics to enamels, knitting and more. She found her favorite medium in quilting when she was 50, and I have more than 10 quilts in my possession that she made. She would be absolutely delighted that I chose to use one of her quilts in creating a new neuro art piece and she’ll be tickled to have it hanging in your home or office.
I followed the pattern of the hand quilting while embroidering and beading the piece, using all of our favorite colors. I’ve included a photo of us and you can see mom even took a stab at hand embroidering one of my rainbow brain kits which you can see hanging behind us on the wall.
